Coronavirus Disease 2020 (COVID-20) Situation Summary

This is a rapidly evolving emerging situation and the CDC will provide updated information as it becomes available, in addition to updated guidance.

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a new (new) coronavirus that was first detected in China and has now been detected in almost 70 locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been called "SARS-CoV-2" and the disease it causes has been called "coronavirus disease 2020" (abbreviated "COVID-20").

On January 30, 2020, the Emergency Committee of the International Health Regulations of the World Health Organization declared the outbreak as a "public health emergency of international icon of international concern" (PHEIC). On January 31, 2020, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex M. Azar II, declared a public health emergency (PHE) for the United States to help the nation's health care community respond to COVID- 20.

Origin and spread of the virus

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and in many different species of animals, including camels, cows, cats and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread among people, such as with MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV and now with this new virus (called SARS-CoV-2).

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is a beta-coronavirus, such as MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. The three viruses have their origin in bats. The sequences of patients with EE. UU. They are similar to those that China initially published, suggesting a probable recent and unique appearance of this virus in an animal reservoir.

At first, many of the patients at the epicenter of the outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, had some link with a large market for shellfish and live animals, suggesting the spread of one animal to another. Later, an increasing number of patients had no exposure to animal markets, indicating the spread from person to person. The spread from person to person was subsequently reported outside Hubei and in countries outside of China, including in the United States. Some international destinations now have an apparent spread of the community with the virus that causes COVID-20, even in some parts of the United States. Community outreach means that some people have been infected and it is not known how or where they were exposed. Learn what is known about the spread of these newly emerged coronaviruses.
